PRO2030 The Realistic PRO-2030 desktop scanner from Radio Shack (Cat. No. 20-407) can be modified to unblock the 824-851 and 869-896 MHz bands rather easily. This procedure WILL cause loss of the memory contents. Tools required: phillips screw driver small wire cutters A static free workstation is recommended. A computer workstation is usually a good place to work. If you have a humidifier, operate it for an hour or two in the room you intend to work. Instructions: 0) READ the instructions first! 1) Remove the 5 screws holding the bottom cover and set aside. 2) Locate L201 on the computer board. There is a white cone for the display back lighting. The computer board is located between this cone and the top cover of the scanner. From the inside of the scanner, this circuit board appears to have little more than 3 diodes, a wire loop, and ribbon cables connecting it to other boards in the scanner. The wire loop is marked L201. 3) Cut and spread L201. 4) Reassemble the scanner. 5) Reinitialize the scanner. Turn on the scanner. While holding the CLEAR button, press the RESET button on the back. All memories will be lost. 800MHz is now unblocked. If you want to look at the other side of the computer board, remove 1 of the screws from each of the 2 right angle brackets on either side of the computer board. Tip the front panel towards the top of the scanner until the panel comes away from the top. There are no implied or stated guarantees that your scanner will survive this operation or operate as expected. (Sorry about that, but it seemed to be a good idea.) I had no problems, and would be suprised if anyone else did - unless they sometimes draw sparks when they walk across the floor. If anyone comes up with other mods for this scanner, I'd like to hear about them. Enjoy! 73 de Brett KA7CGB @ K7BUC.AZ.USA.NA 14JAN94
